I Was A Soldier Once and Young

The army is an extraordinary organization. They teach you to respect others, self respect, discipline, duty, and most of all honour. It seems I was made for this as I went through my basic training without difficulties except for the time I caught acute tonsillitis. Illness set me back on my training but I persevered. Everyday was a challenge and me being a short person and somewhat of an introverted person the challenges were even greater. However, again I persevered, I overcame and I became a soldier.
As I said, the army is an extraordinary organization. If you take a close look at the training in the 60's and 70's you were trained to become a killing machine. By order, you were taught to survive and kill without compassion. Would I kill today? Most likely without giving it much thought.
Life was good in the army. You got fed well, you had a roof over your head, the pay was pitiful and you got lots of time off. What more could a grunt want? By the way if you think this is a put down of Canadian Army Life your dead wrong. I have the deepest respect for the Army. After having finished basic training other avenues became available to enhance my combat skills.
